Apart from the obvious ones of don’t touch the hot stones, and be careful around the woodturning stove, there are a few safety precautions that need to be taken while using the sauna. While the sauna can be a very relaxing experience, a certain precautions are to be taken to enjoy the sauna.

Length Of Stay

15 min or thereabouts is the general length spent on a sauna round, but based on your tolerance to heat that number may wary. Listen to your body and don’t stay in too long beyond your comfort level. If you are sensitive to heat, start with smaller sessions in the heat.

Hydration

It is essential to stay hydrated. This is one of the major rules of a successful sauna session. Sauna is basically sweating, a lot of water is essential to stay hydrated and keep the water balance of your body. The body has ways of getting rid of excess water, so its okay to drink plenty of water before, during and after sauna sessions.

Keep Company

Sauna is a social affair and most people use the sauna as a group. Watch out for your sauna neighbors, keep an eye on them and assist promptly if they are or seem to be in distress. If you are planning on having a solo sauna experience, make sure to have a trusted buddy check on you.

Health Constraints

Health Constraints: If you have a heart condition, are pregnant the sauna is off limits. Sauna can cause low or high blood pressure, consult your doctor before using the sauna. If you feel out of breath, nauseous, dizzy or develop a headache, exit the sauna and relax. Do not push yourself to stay in the sauna if you feel uncomfortable.

Saunas can burn

Saunas can cause burns, skin blistering and dry (therefore bloody) nostrils if the sauna temperature is too high. Always keep an eye on the thermometer and switch off the stove when temperatures start to soar. Take a break and renter sauna after checking the temperature.

Alcohol is banned

Do not drink in the sauna or enter the sauna while intoxicated. Alcohol after a sauna session is also discouraged as it doesnt encourage hydration. Alcohol inhibits your body’s reaction times and that is not encouraged in a sauna. Also, do not enter a sauna after a huge meal or strenuous workouts. Wait a little until your body feels a little relaxed to enter the sauna after a workout.
